My granny calls them painters. She said they would hear them all the time on Doogan Mountain in Cisco, Georgia.Apparently one day she and her sisters decided to skip school to go play in the woods, dip snuff, and smoke rabbit tobacco...while they were goofing off near the old Cockburn farm they realized something was on the trail behind them...turns out it was a painter and they all took off running and it scared them so badly that they all ran to the school and burst into the one room schoolhouse scared to death. They all got a paddling for skipping school. When they told my great grandpa about it, he went to town and came home with 3 huge Great Pyrenees dogs to keep the kids safe going to and from school. You never know what's in the mountains around here

The Dictionary of Smoky Mountain English quote: "A fictitious, fearsome, catlike creature of indeterminate size, often used to admonish children to behave; a hobgoblin. Same as wampus." Under Wampus: "The "Wompus Cat" is probably one of the most unusual legends to come out of Sevier County (Tenn). The WC was supposed to be a black shaggy-haired thing about the size of a dog with a long, pointed nose that glowed like a cigar." etc. Panther: "variant forms 'painter.' The common term in the mountains for the mountain lion." So I guess the wampus is different from place to place. I was hoping you had a specific tale to tell about the wampus.
