I can tell when it's a C-5 just by the sound. The unmistakable simultaneous sound and contrast of very high and very low pitch whine of the engines makes it sound like no other plane.

I used to refuel planes for the Air Force, and each time a C-5 came through, I had to watch it take off. The damned thing looks to BIG to fly, and yet, it goes off into the wild blue yonder.

I love the sound they make when they take off. It's like a war cry.

The BUZZsaw of engines!! The only other aircraft that had that sound was the DC-10!

Now THIS is what a jet should sound like...!!! Pure raw power folks. The only other jets that come close to this sound. Is the L10-11 and 757 in my opinion.

Ah, Westover Air Reserve Base. Home of the 439th Per-diem Wing and the 337th Per-diem Squadron and their POS C-5Bs. Allow me to qualify that statement by saying that I'm a maintainer who works on these planes for a living. They may sound nice, but they're POS planes that suck to work on. Getting them airborne is nothing short of a miracle.

I was in Panama when the ramp up for the invasion on Noriega. I can remember the whole skyline full of c5 galaxies heading to land at Albrook Air Force base. The sound and site was aw-inspiring.

The C-141, the L-1011, the DC-8 with the CFM-56 engines, Antonev AN-124, 777, the MD-90 and the 717, have this sound.
