My love letter to cosplay | Adam Savage 5

Adam Savage makes things and builds experiments, and he uses costumes to add humor, color and clarity to the stories he tells. Tracing his lifelong love of costumes — from a childhood space helmet made of an ice cream tub to a No-Face costume he wore to Comic-Con — Savage explores the world of cosplay and the meaning it creates for its community. "We're connecting with something important inside of us," he says. "The costumes are how we reveal ourselves to each other."

"If you don't know about Spirited Away or it's director Hayo Miyazaki. Your welcome." Ain't that the truth. 🤩

Thanks Adam your making Studio Ghibli fans.

Cosplay literally saved my life. I was addicted to self harm, i was depressed, and I had an eating disorder. One day, a friend of mine told me that I should cosplay, and I was very hesitant because I didn’t want to show my arms. But I really wanted to cosplay, so I tried my best to not cut. As it turned out, the only reason I have not self harmed is because of cosplay. I hate it when people say that it is stupid, or weird, because I know for a fact that if it wasn’t for cosplay, I would be dead.

I never cosplayed in my life but its wonderful to just hear someone talk about their passion and share their emotions.

This just reminded me of a quote from the Joker: "give a man a mask and he shows his true self"

You can hear the passion in his voice. Hearing him talk about what he loves literally made me cry. Such a great storyteller. I fucking love this dude.

I started cosplaying in the '90s when I was in my late 30s. My first cosplay was a original Xena: Warrior Princess character I invented. Its now 2019, and I have my weekend pass for the big summertime anime con in my adopted state. The oldest cosplayer I ever saw was in his 70s, and he was the Third Hokage from Naruto. I"m 57 and I still cosplay.

Point is, you're never too old to cosplay. Go on, geek out and have fun cosplaying! (^_^)

I still am not satisfied....

aww man, this reminds me of that one weekend at MCM Comic Con London; I was cosplaying as Extra #66 Ravenclaw Hogwarts student (I bought the actual official robes from the Studio Tour near London, such great quality and wool and looks AMAZING btw) and I kept running into a guy cosplayed as Professor Snape. And omg, my instant initial reaction was to bow and say "I apologise for being in your way sir", and the guy instantly retorts back "be more careful. 5 points from Ravenclaw.". And I saw him around the floor all weekend, and every time we made eye contact, he would make such a stern face and be into character that I couldn't help but react. Cosplay, man.

I spent HOURS making my Roy Mustang cosplay from stuff I found at goodwill ( I was a poor college kid). I dyed my hair and even borrowed an old binder from my trans friend cause I'm a cis-girl. I wore it all around campus acting like Roy and so many nerds suddenly morphed out of my classmates. It was beautiful. Then I drove six hours to meet my online friend who dressed as Edward and go to con. Best weekend ever.

When I went to my first convention, I was cosplaying Rose Quartz from Steven Universe and these 3 little kids dressed as Freddie, Bonnie and Chica from FNAF came running up to me for a picture. My dress was a bed sheet glued together but those kids made me feel like I was one of the princesses in Disney parks from the joy in their eyes.

Haven't been back to a convention in a few years after a falling out with ex friends, but this makes me want to try again

At my last con I went as L from Death Note. And I brought tons of sweets and a big bag of sweets that looked like strawberries. Whenever I met or talked with someone id say before I left. "If you keep my secret (that I'm L) I'll give you a strawberry." Everyone I did this too lit up with a smile cuz it's free food but many just loved the idea.
And even tho my wig was terrible so many people were impressed and some actual thought that I had bought my death notes. When I made them myself.

I'm making a No Face costume at the moment and will be doing a more human look. I'll be wearing all black and will have the markings of the mask on my face too. I'll also be bringing chocolate coins.

It's so cool that someone like Adam Savage is openly into cosplay and nerd culture. He's a good doorway for people who don't understand it to be exposed to it and I hope someday while I'm alive it won't be seen as something so weird to the general public because I really love cosplay but I can only share it with those special people who understand.

Cosplay is so amazing. Sometimes when you feel weak and lonely in your own self, becoming a character that you love can open up a whole new world of friends.

One day I'm going to cosplay as Adam Savage.
