The awesome power of these planes never ceases to amaze me that jumbo came in near touchdown and yet she was brought up again in no effort .

Better be safe than sorry.... I applaud the pilot's great decision..

This is why I want my pilot well paid and happy.

That was almost like a soft field takeoff. Staying in ground effect for a while to pick up speed before he pulled out of ground effect. Nicely executed go around. More pilots need to learn that if your approach is unstable that there is nothing wrong with going around and doing it again. Many crashes could have been avoided by simply going around.

Are you an Airline pilot ? If you are, do you ever flew to Narita? Always windy and normally with windshear, and it occurs very close to the GROUND .We can initiate a go around down to 50ft and in a plane of that size and mass and normally it will touch the GROUND to start climbing again . GO AROUND is a normal procedure, nothing to do with a pilot error. It is instead a very safety action to do! SAFETY is PRIORITY, all the other things comes later.

standard procedure ....nothing unusual about this. when you have severe crosswind or windshear, this is a safe option to take.

He used up to much runway trying to get it on the ground.  Good choice to go around.

Good decision. No need to be a fkn hero. Safety first.

Looked like gusts were tossing it around quite a bit.  Did he leave a bit of extra approach speed on for that and end up floating?

I'd much rather have  last minute go around than try and slam it on the runway.  I've been on a plane where that happened.  It wasn't pretty but fortunately just veered off into grass and stopped OK.  Worst part was I was trapped in a window seat with an enormous first time flier panicking and grabbing onto me.  As I was in a window seat and on the side we where we were turning, I could see there were no obstacles and tried to explain it but she was going berserk.  It was bulkhead and the flight attendant strapped into the jumpseat was trying her best too but no dice.  When we stopped this lady jumped up and almost knocked the flight attendant down trying to get to the door.  It took 3 people to restrain her so we could evacuate. I for one was happy to be in front and out and gone quickly.  Once out it was evident we had lost all tires on landing.  There was rubber everywhere but on the rims.  Although no harm done, I would have preferred a go around to that!

Its a good example of how technically amazing these planes are, even something as huge, heavy and cumbersome as a 747 its as responsive to thrust as a car! Amazing...

Great And my favorite airplane, just love it.

Great video, amazing pitch oscillation, if the approach isn't stabilized there remains only one option...

I'm just a Cessna pilot... but dang! The engineering of those city on wings is so remarkable! Love me some 74s

I've done enough flying to know that I trust the pilots. They're amazing. If they don't want to land, neither do I!!

I would much rather get there a half hour late than wind up in the morgue from a runway over-run or crash landing. Watching the final approach, with the oscillations and amount of crabbing this pilot had to do, this was trying to land in cross winds at or over maximum crosswinds this design was capable of dealing with. As I know nothing about the landing weight, approach speed and other conditions of this flight, it is very obvious this pilot was good enough to know he had no other option than TOGA. He made the choice and did the right thing. All of the pilots I know are not all that worried about killing themselves, but are terrified of harming or killing any of their passengers. This guy knew what he was doing and did the right thing, with a quarter billion dollar airplane and a couple hundred passengers aboard. Good job!

There is more to the difference between being a good pilot and a great pilot than most people realize. A good landing is one where everyone walks away - or at least survives. A great landing is one where you can reuse the airframe.

Looked like some serious crosswinds…see the right wing flexing?
