These trials are turning into a changing of the guard with young swimmers beating out veterans for Olympic spots. Lydia Jacoby had a fantastic swim for 2nd place in the women's 100 breaststroke, in all likelihood earning an Olympic berth with veteran Lilly King. The men's 200 freestyle saw 3 first time Olympians make the team, and a time trial for the 2nd 400 freestyle spot saw Jake Mitchell have the swim of his life and earning an Olympic birth.
In the coming days Caeleb Dressel will take to the pool for the 100 freestlye, an event he is all but sure to win, and Simone Manuel will vie for a spot in the 100 freestyle (where she is the reigning Olympic champion and double world champion). I'm personally extremely excited for what's to come. While it saddens me to see veterans I was rooting for miss the team, such as 2012 Gold Medalist Matt Grevers, I am equally as excited to see the new guard rise up. Kieran Smith, Michael Andrew, Jake Mitchell, Lydia Jacoby, Torri Huske, and Claire Curzan, are just a few of the rising swimmers who will be ones to watch for years to come.
