COVID-19 | Coronavirus: Epidemiology, Pathophysiology, Diagnostics 5

Ninja Nerds,
What is Corona virus? What is COVID-19? Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV). Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) caused by SARS-COV2 is a new strain that was discovered in 2019 and has not been previously identified in humans.
Coronaviruses are zoonotic, meaning they are transmitted between animals and people.  Detailed investigations found that SARS-CoV was transmitted from civet cats to humans and MERS-CoV from camels to humans. Several known coronaviruses are circulating in animals that have not yet infected humans. It is believed that COVID-19 was transmitted from pangolin to humans (current theory).
Common signs of infection include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. In more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and even death (WHO, 2020).
Ninja Nerd Lectures has compiled the most up to date and recent data on COVID-19 as of March 15, 2020. Please follow along with this lecture to understand the origin and zoonosis of COVID-19, the routes of transmission, epidemiology (current as of 3/15/2020), pathophysiology, and diagnostic tests used to identify COVID-19.
As new information and research is published we will continue to provide updates on COVID-19 and ensure all of our viewers are kept up to date on the most recent data.

💬 Comments on the video

This is my colleague, Zach whom I’ve had the pleasure of working with as a chemistry tutor at Northampton Community College. He’s an absolute brilliant educator with an incredible memory and passion for science. True story: when Zach started the Ninja Nerd Science channel, it was part of his tutoring position at the college and was meant as a supplementary addition to learning for students in general chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry and anatomy & physiology. Our boss at the time didn’t like the length of Zach’s videos. She told him to stop making the videos because ‘they’re too long and nobody would watch them’. Zach responded with something along the lines of ‘the hell with that!’ and quit the position soon after to continue with the channel. I said it to him then and I’m saying it again now: Good for you, Zach! You deserve all the recognition you’ve acquired and more! As a result of your burning passion for science and teaching, you’ve reached countless lives around the world and helped them understand such important, complex topics. Keep doing what you’re doing buddy! You were born for it.

Edit: WOW! Never would have thought my comment would get this much attention! I went through and read all of your replies and it appears that many were interested in some more background information. So here it is:

First and foremost, Zach and I had worked together as paraprofessional tutors for about 3 years at the college’s Science Resource Center. Zach created this youtube channel over 2 years ago and he did it with the help of 2 other wonderful tutors, Rob and Kristen (Also had the pleasure of working with them). I didn’t acknowledge Rob and Kristen in my initial comment which I certainly should have because the 3 of them are the amazing individuals responsible for this educational gift they’ve given us. They’re a hell of a team.

2nd, our boss, at the time Zach had created the channel was a wonderful person and she never meant any kind disrespect towards Zach in giving her criticisms. For confidential and professional reasons, I won’t be sharing her name but I just wanted to let it be known that she was a wonderful person and her, nor any of us, could have ever imagined what this youtube channel would turn in to. Also wanted to let it be known that this all occurred over 2 years ago and I am no longer employed there.

Lastly, the main point I was trying to make in writing this comment initially was to shed light on how fortunate it was that Zach disregarded a superior’s order to end the project. This youtube channel may have never existed if not for his decision so it was a real blessing.

As for the other comments I read that were directed toward myself, I am unable to respond because i’m not (and never was) affiliated with the production of this youtube channel, nor have I worked at the college with Zach after he created it.

To end with a final note: the accuracy or the validity of information being presented in this video need not be met with accusations of misinformation spreading or other negative/harshly opinionated remarks. There is a medical disclaimer at the beginning of the video for this reason and therefore, all information presented is meant to educate individuals who were seeking additional medical terminology and other details of this rapidly evolving situation. With that said, the information in this video was researched and presented to the best of their ability and with good intention to share information that was known at the time of this video’s creation.

I would like to say one last thank you to those who read and enjoyed this experience I wished to share. Stay safe everyone!

Eating healthy diet is very helpful + water. I also add to my diet as it contains elderberry, turmeric and probiotics.

I never comment on YouTube videos. I am writing this as a scientist, a mentor, volunteer EMT, and instructor - this has been the BEST description and illustration. You are a very talented teacher and artistic. I inspire to be a great teacher like you.

This young man is adept at explaining a complex subject at a layman's level. I understand a lot of it but intend to watch it again to cement the knowledge into my brain so I can transmit it to others. Whoever it was that told him his videos were too long did not have an appreciation for an audience that needed technical subjects illustrated by words and diagrams. Well done, Zach, you are a great educator - keep up the good transmission of knowledge!

This is the thing that we should be seeing daily in news, not the non-sense toilet paper panic or financial chaos.

This is amazing, I am a 7th grade student trying to learn about the Science behind Covid, and your video was just so clear and easy to follow especially with the helpful drawings. Even though I didn't understand some of the terminology, I was able to understand the concepts and how Covid takes over our body. Thank you so much, keep it up!

I echo the comment of a RN below. Your teaching technique is brilliant. I understood all of it and learned so much. You are a born teacher. Totally humble - down to our level yet raising to yours. Well done !! Brilliant.

The outbreak and spread of the coronavirus are far beyond my imagination, also beyond most people's imagination, I think. It also causes a severe shortage of personal protection equipment particularly face masks. I failed to find masks in our local pharmacies and finally knew through my friend. This site sells all kinds of masks on a personal protective level, not a medical level. The masks that I bought were shipped to me in 3 days and they are made in good quality. If anyone needs masks, you can visit it.

It definately becomes deadly when an edict from governors tell hospitals to send infectious patients to nursing homes where the most vournable patients reside. Thank you Cuomo.
