Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar - TN Krishnan - Palghat Mani Iyer in Alleppey, Kerala sometime in 1956.

I apologize for the many unfortunate cuts before and after pieces, and the many changes in audio quality, and general issues. Many parts of this concert can be found online, but I had use many different sources including my own collection to complete the concert.

This image does not correlate with this concert. For those who are interested in the artists in the photo, from left to right, Shri Palghat Mani Iyer, Shri Palghat Raghu, an unidentified person, (perhaps another student of Shri Iyengarval, but please let me know if you have any information regarding this person), Shri Iyengarval, it is said to be Shri KV Narayanaswamy behind him, playing the tambura, Shri TN Krishnan, and Shri Pazhani Subhramania Pillai.

Concert List:
1. Neranammiti - Kanada - Ata talam - 0:00

2. Endaro - Sri - Adi talam - 4:06

3. Ramanatham - Pantuvarali - Rupaka talam - 13:40

4. Chakkani raja - Kharaharapriya - Adi talam - 26:22

5. Ninnuvinaga - Poorvikalyani - Deshadi Viloma Misra talam - 40:15

6. Hariharaputram - Vasanta - Khanda jati eka talam - 51:08

Note: Unfortunately, it seems that Shri Iyengarval’s alaapana has cut out of this recording, and it immediately goes from the above piece to Shri TN Krishnan’s alaapana.

7. Azhi mazhaikanna (Tiruppavai) Varali - Adi talam - 1:02:16
(w/thani-avartanam starting at 1:12:00)

8. Hecharikagarara - Yadukulakambhoji - Khanda Chapu talam - 1:20:20

9. Koluvamare gada - Todi - Adi talam - 1:34:09

10. Karavaigal pinsenru (Tiruppavai) - Kambhoji - Adi talam - 2:00:54

11. Toli janma - Bilahari - Khanda Chapu talam - 2:07:26

16. Vandaan vandaan - Mohanam - Adi talam - 3:03:55

17. Slokam - Ragamalika - “Janati rama” - Nadanamakriya, Sindhubhairavi - 3:07:09

Note: I believe that in the original recording this slokam is followed by the Tiruppavai “Anrivvulgam.” Unfortunately, it is cut from this recording, and it immediately goes from the above slokam to the next piece. During the Sindhubhairavi portion of this slokam, Shri TN Krishnan’s alaapana is also cut off in the middle. I apologize for this.

18. Kandu dhanyanade - Behag - Rupaka talam - 3:15:13

19. Arivar yar - Mukhari - Misra Chapu talam - 3:17:20

20. Tillana - Thodi - 3:19:42

21. A speech which seems to be made by one of the people hosting the concert or from the audience - (Shri Iyengarval himself interject from time to time during this speech) - 3:22:14

22. Mangalam - 3:30:14

no wonder even maniiyer mama, lost all the josh in his heart after ariyakudi thatha's passing away!!! i cant imagine the loss his fans must have felt. i can now understand what led to my appa sri.k.v.n"s heart attack in 1967. his heart must have literally broken!! listening to ariyakudi thatha now, makes me miss him so much. i cant imagine my appa's sorrow at his only love's passing away!! i have only heard my appa talk about him, as Lord Hanuman would, about Lord Rama!! thank you balu sir, from the bottom of my heart for this priceless upload!!

my appa used to say that people of those times used to say that Sri subramanyaaya namaste was composed by sri muthuswami deekshatar, the deergadarshi knowing mahaan, that, centuries later a musician will be born, worthy enough to render his masterpiece sri subramanyaaya namaste and composed it and kept it ready for ariyakudi thata!!! well, when we listen to ariyakudi thata composing of the thiruppavais we get a strong feeling , that, there is a very real possibility, that deekshatar( the mahaagnyaany that he was) may have indeed known that such a priceless gem would be born a century later to be a worthy custodian of why sri subramanyaaya namaste, even the raga kambhoji itself!!! what a beauuuutiful karavaigal composed in kambhoji by ariyakudi thatha!!!

What a magical sound. The giant at 66 sounds like this. Cant even imagine how he must have been in his 30s. And that mrdangam. Another genius at play.. if this concert were to happen today, it would still be a full house...

Incredible to know how a legend of yesteryear used to sing, the mridangam and violin are a class above. The brisk speed of Semmangudi, GNB and Ariyakudi really take Carnatic to the next level and shaking your head to the beat seems impossible to avoid

My father whenever he referred him always ended his conversation by saying he was class by himself. My uncles who was trained western music and concert player always referred to him mathematical musician. They just loved his music but I was born late I never heard him live. This is treat to me . Thank you for making it available for us.

What a lucid rendering of all the alapanas. Even people like me who have no knowledge of the intricacies of each raga are able to identify the ragas linking it to a known song. This is possible only because of the clarity and simplicity of the rendering. I am blessed to be able to listen to such divine music and it is because of greats like Shri Ariakudi that karnatic music is surviving and blossoming 🌸 Your effort and contribution is of immense value in making available such divine music to listeners and kindling their interest. Thank you Sir 🙏

I am delighted that a good neat version of this epoch making concert of 1956 has been posted here. For the information of those unaware of the background, let me point out a few specialities.Fortunately, I was present in this concert along with my father and siblings when I was barely 8 years. This recording turned out to be the Bhagavad Gita of our household thereafter. We have heard this concert numerous times that we can recall every little sound, even non musical, in the recording such as utterances of Aha, sabash, delirious laughter arising from enjoyment when Mani Mama any of his inimitable statements on Mridangam...
There is also a big interesting story behind the way the concert was organised.
This recording was a Philips tape recorder with a 5" spool and mono.Single Mike for the concert as well as recording. Please note the impeccable balance and audibility of every nuance of the music from 3 sources. With no microphone other than what Ariyakudi Thatha faced, the Mridangam, the Ghumki from the Thoppy is so beautifully heard.Unparalleled.
Very happy the concert in full is made available except for the portion referred to by the gentleman who has posted it.For information, I would like to add there was one more composition sung in this concert
Janakiramana in Shudha Seemanthini which unfortunately got partially cut even in the original recording due to spool change!!.That portion containing swarams which we have heard seems to be missing now.
Anuradha has very nicely given expression to what we all feel whenever we hear Ariyakudi Thatha, especially this concert because of the nostalgia. It also reminds us of the numerous occasions when we have heard KVN Mama's conversation with my father Late K Parthasarathi of Alleppey whose speech is heard at the end.The enthusiasm of the all time great vidwans and the rasikas was palpable even at 1.30 am, after 4 hours 30 minutes.!!
Listening to this for the Nth time makes me emotional.

what a priceless thodi. the gamaka coated /fiiled brigas are why ariyakudi thatha is ONE OF A KIND GANDARVA. just this thodi alone a lifetime study. it is indeed a wonder that krishnan mama was even able to keep up with him!! not just full throated, but full chested vocalisation at 66 yrs of we are not listening to a human but a superhuman!! every phrase he sings, says he is indeed THE MUSICIAN OF MUSICIANS. but for these recordings, future generations will scarecely believe that such extraordinary musicianship vocalisation is even possible!!

Transported to another world the Golden age of karnatik music.
What a singing with super accompanists.
Scintillating thanis by Mani Iyer!
The photo shown though not concerned with this concert is interesting. It has both Mani Iyer and another great Palani pillaival sitting on the right. Palani has played kanjira in many concerts with Mani iyer. I can also see Palghat
Raghu behind Mani iyer. The person behind Ariyakudi seems to be KVN his prime disciple. Not sure.

Let me get this straight, kannada varnam, a pancharathna krithi, panthuvarali karaharapriya, poorvikalyani (starting 6 after misrha chapu no less), a thirupavai, yadhukulakambhoji, TODI, kambojhi (ANOTHER thirupavai), sahana, mohanam. Ariyakudi is simply unmatched in my opinion. Potentially the best concert list I have ever seen

Who would have heard of these places Ariyakudi, Semmangudi, Maharajapuram, Alsthur, Kunnakudi if they had not been the birth places of the musical wizards who were born in them.
