One of the hardest aspects to overcome is the horrible feeling of worthlessness that the alcoholic parent instills in you. You grow up thinking that you have this terrible flaw that you must compensate for and you feel awful even trying to make friends etc with others.

"The alcoholic took up all of the oxygen in the family." It's very true and it's almost as if the alcoholic perpetuates their addiction simply to make everyone focus their care on them.

Wow! Never realized I was an ACOA/ACA. I believe my mother to be a malignant narcissist (she is diagnosed bipolar), but neither her nor my stepdad were drinkers. Nonetheless, they loved to pop pills and shove them down the childrens' throats...so much so that both my stepfather and half brother had to go to rehab (And despite it all, my mother is a geriatric nurse). Thanks for clarifying this.

My father-in-law was an alcoholic...never got drunk, but revolved his life around going to the bar. Whether it's drugs, alcohol, gambling or social standing, whatever you revolve your life around other than God, the Triune God of the Holy Bible, is idolatry. And your idols will always chew you up and spit you out. And, tragically, your family members suffer, as you describe here.
