Did oil patterns cause this unusual condition? Yesterday I had my best 3 game series ever. I was missing the pocket and getting strikes. I am right handed. I started throwing at the 10th board for the 1/3 pocket and couldn't get a strike.I saw my wife was throwing right handed at the 25th board and hitting the 1/2 pocket every time. I adjusted to throw at the 25th for the 1/2 pocket . My straight ball was moving 2.5 boards to the right. I was more consistent than ever. Some shots I hit the 1/3 pocket and striked. If I left a 7 or 10 pin, to pick up the spare, the ball went straight. I threw at the 5th board for the 10 pin, 35th for 7 pin. It seemed any ball thrown at the 3 middle arrows curved toward the head pocket, any ball thrown outside the middle 3 arrows went straight. I asked a bowling alley worker when the lanes were oiled last. He said ''late last night after bowlers left, oil is probably built up near the pins". I bowled at 1PM before anybody used the lane. Does this sound oil caused this unusual condition?

I tape my thumb...Turbo Grip on the “inside” (pad) and Vise Hada on the backside...nice tight fit and a clean release. I know it’s more expensive because it’s a one-time use, but it doesn’t gunk up my thumb hole.

Only bowled for about 1 1/2 years. Took lessons at ITRC. Gone to nationals. Did not know much about the tape. So I watched your video with intensity. Tonight is league night of 58 teams in Dallas area. I work on my pearl statement setting up the tape as you said. Team members were having a heart attack because we're in 16th place. Shot 189 and 246. My highest game ever. I was so thankful you created this youtube channel. Yes, I'm a 68 old year male trying to catch up on a sport I never tried.

JR - always appreciate the tips and insights. I went to the Bowler X site after this video and was unable to locate the three types of tape used in the video. Maybe you could have a selection of the three tape types available with the cases so we can purchase and try to follow your suggestions?

Hey JR, How do I know if I should use a 1 inch tape or a 3/4 inch tape?

I've used a custom molded thumb slug for several years and it truly is the perfect fit for me so far. And my hand swells and contracts constantly. So I've never had to use tape. I still carry tape just in case, but I've never used it. My issue with tape is the different textures and feel. Both white textured tape and black slick tape feel strange to me. When I used to use it, it never felt good with me. I'd still use it, but was never confident with my release. Hence the custom molded thumb. To each their own, but I guess I got lucky with my custom slug.

Very nice info!! I have never used tape in my thumb hole and may have to try it out now that I know why exactly the pros use it.

I am transitioning from a two finger grip to a thumb release grip. Which level turbo tape should I start out with to relieve thumb tension right at the pad? My ball does not have a thumb slug. Should I get a thumb slug first?

Nice video. Do you have e links for the tape? Amazon has a bunch of different types and I just want the ones you mentioned in this video. Thanks

JR. Is your friend the Steve Novak that bowled at Saginaw Valley 2005 ish time frame? If so, please tell him Martez (Tez) Banks says hello.

I was a teammate and bowled with him and Anthony Lacaz. Great tips. Keep up the good work.

In my opinion, the biggest point here is that all of us bowlers should have a really tight fit for the thumb hole. If I get even a little room around the thumb, I can not release the ball cleanly. I always say that the rule is: If you can push the thumb in the thumb hole, then you have to be able to get out of it as well. The more room you have in that slug, your thumb will want to grab the ball and instead of getting a faster and cleaner release, you will get hangs and drops on the line. To explain to a beginner bowler how should it fit on the thumb, I take out the thumb insert and let them try to slide it on my thumb. When that person realizes how much pressure it takes to get that slug on my thumb, they realize how far you can go to get a really good fit on the thumb, and still get a super clean release (no swelling and no marks on the thumb). Tapes are a huge part of that fit, and feel, and a big deal in getting a bowler to reach that desired tightness inside the thumbhole.

Would you ever use tape on your thumb and tape in the thumb hole at the same time? Or should u use them separately
