LYRICS:
Isn't it amazing how a man can find himself alone
Call into the darkness for an answer that's he's never known
Isn't it amazing how God can take a broken man
Let him find a fortune let him ruin it with his own two hands

And he walks on up the hill
on the rock on which he stands
he looks back at the crowd
And he looks down at his hands and he says
I am a difference maker.

I am the difference maker
I am the only one that speaks to him
I am the friendliest of friends of God.

Isn't it amazing how a man can find himself alone
Call into the darkness for an answer that's he's never known

And he walks on up the hill
on the rock on which he stands
he looks back at the ground
And he looks down at his hands and he says
I am a difference maker.

I am the difference maker
I am the only one that speaks to him
I am the friendliest of friends of God.

I am on the fence about nearly everything I've seen
And I have felt the fire be put out by too much gasoline
We're all strangers passing through, place and time, afternoon
Life is but a vision in a window that we're peeking through

It's a helpless conversation with a man who says he cares a lot
It's a hopeless confrontation about who might throw a punch or not
And we are all transgressors, we're all sinners, we're all astronauts
So if you're beating death then raise your hand but shut up if you're not.

I am the difference maker
I am the only one that speaks to him
I am the friendliest of friends of God.

I am the difference maker
I am the only one that speaks to him
I am the friendliest of friends of God.

This song is such an incredible reminder of the mindset we should all stay in! NO matter how big or small, we ALL make a difference!

I struggled with the meaning of the lyrics also. There are postings on the internet about what the band says about the meaning. The bottom line I got was that they struggled with whether, in fact, they were making a difference. But the revelation is that it is not US who makes the difference, it is God. The Holy Spirit makes the difference. We are astronauts, sent out into the cold darkness to speak the truth. We do our jobs, we serve Him and it is He that makes the difference. When we think we are the only one who speaks to Him, when we think we are the friendliest of friends of God, we deceive ourselves. We are sinners. We have such a small concept of God and such a large concept of who we are. We are looking through a very small, very smudged and dirty window. We claim a glory which is not ours. The fire is from the Holy Spirit. The gasoline is pride. It blows us up and leaves us alone in an abandoned moonscape of desolation. We strive and struggle to reach the top of the hill, only to find ourselves standing on a lonely rock looking down at our hands before the crowds before us and realize that we have wasted away the fortune God gave us. We did not make that fortune, it was given to us as a gift and we ruin it by the pride of the very belief that we made it with our own two hands. No, we are not the difference makers. He is.

Truthfully, I have probably listened to this song close to one hundred times now. It has been well over a year, and I have discovered deeper meanings as time elapsed.

On the surface, this song appears to be just another poetic piece of praise. The difference maker may be understood as Christ himself, in which case the lyrics would probably be appropriate. However, if one were to take a first person’s approach and assume himself in that same position, the lyrics adopt a standoffish and arrogant feel.

This song is so relatable, because the protagonist is the steadfast and self-proclaimed difference maker that is me. The difference maker that is sometimes righteous in word, but seldom righteous in act. Bold but not brave, intelligent yet not wise. Attentive yet not discerning, strong in flesh yet weak in spirit. A difference maker who does not distinguish the different, let alone support it.

The magic of this song lies in its dual-meanings throughout. The initial self-righteous gratification of singing this song, has turned into realization of my hypocrisy.

The lyrics in the chorus, "I'm the only one who speaks to him, I'm the friendliest of friends of God" is referencing to how the Pharisees believed. It's written to be sarcastic, because any Christian knows that God is infinitely good and infinitely holy and that in our human condition, anything we do and say that is "good" does not come close in comparison with the Holy father. And the only thing that covers our sins and makes us "friends of God" is the blood of Christ! Nothing from our own hands!

"I feel like the beginning of the song is us asking ourselves are we really difference makers. How valuable are we, really? Towards the end of the song it comes around that God makes us a part of what He does, which is so crazy. It starts with us realizing that we don't get to make the rules. We don't control it, and we don't get to say what the timing is. It's not because of our talents. He doesn't need that. He needs our willing hearts." -Bear Rinehart

Yeah.  Amen on that.

I feel like I needed to say this as if God was telling me to. Anyways I thought I found my fortune but much like the lyrics I, "ruined it with my own two hands". To put this to context, my fortune was a better relationship with God and winning a war that we all fight, sin and temptation. What I learned from this though is that the second you think you are good and you are winning, so you take things into your own imperfect hands is when you begin to lose. I learned that I need to remember that my flesh is week but God is the reason I was winning. God put us here for a purpose and he gave us each our own war to build our own character and relationship, life, etc... but he also gave us free will. The will to accept him or not. So those of you reading this I ask you not to shut him out keep him in because he is more than willing to fight your battles for you, he will be your best ally and he will provide all the resources needed to win your battles/war. I shut him out, I lost a battle, which is really discouraging but I will keep fighting now along with the best ally and I will find my fortune and I hope and pray that you all do to.

Yeah, isn't it amazing how a man can find himself alone
Call into the darkness for an answer that's he's never known
Yeah, isn't it amazing how God can take a broken man
Yeah, let him find a fortune, let him ruin it with his own two hands

And he climbs on up the hill on the rock on which he stands
He looks back at the crowd
He looks down at his hands and he says
I am a difference maker

Oh, I am
The difference maker
Oh, I am
The only one who speaks to him
And I am
The friendliest of friends of God

Yeah, isn't it amazing how a man can find himself alone
Call into the darkness for an answer that's he's never known
Yeah, isn't it amazing how God can take a broken man
Yeah, let him find a fortune, let him ruin it with his own two hands

He walks on up the hill to the rock on which he stands

Bear Rinehart on "Different Maker"

This song is my story of trying to understand my role in God's plan. We were on tour with a secular artist, Taylor Swift, playing to 20, 000 and even 50, 000 people per night. We felt like we were doing what we were supposed to be doing. Despite our efforts, I didn't feel like we were having the impact we are called to have. I think God was asking us at this time, "What are you doing this for? Are you doing it for Me?" And, I think that's where this song was birthed. That confusion is almost a good thing. The bridge says "I am on the fence about nearly everything I've seen." I meant that in how the whole band was going through a "we surrender to God" kind of way....

The satire of this song is great. People sing along thinking that they are the difference maker when in reality this song is meant to point out the fact that we are anything but.

The Christian life is a contradiction. Called to greatness, when you are not great. It is His power. But it is your hand on the plow. Its messy. And sometimes it is easy to forget that apart from Him, you can do nothing good or pleasing to God at all. God will let us fail in our own power for that very purpose. Amazingly, once were brought through to victory, we may still look down from the mountain, at our own hands, and say I am a difference maker. Yes you are. And no, you are not.

Great song. Great message. From personal experience, it's a lonely and miserable place to think that you are the only one serving God with "pure intentions." Thank you, NTB, for reminding us to stay humble.

A lot of people I think are misunderstanding the message or at least don't get it... so here's my two cents. The band has actually said that this song is about how we start making a difference the moment when we surrender and give our lives up to God (watch Air 1's video interview about the song). Here's what I'd like to add: The song talks about being alone and ruining the fortune that God gives us (life, specifically when we try to live without Him) with our own two hands; in essence, we are broken by ourselves. But then the song talks about climbing up the hill and standing on the Rock (surrendering to God and making Him our Refuge and Strength), and then we become Difference Makers. That's at least the message that I get from it; it's been extremely encouraging to me and I hope this explanation helps people see this song in a new light.
