While Naya Rivera and her son Josey were swimming in Lake Piru, their boat may have drifted away in high winds, according to Ventura County investigators. When they managed to swim back to the pontoon, Rivera died a hero, helping her son onto the boat before slipping underwater. The heartbreaking tragedy is a reminder of how quickly things can go awry when out on the water. Inside Edition’s Anne Mercogliano rented her own pontoon boat in Connecticut to share some important safety lessons.

That child will never forget that day where he saw his mother slip back into the water never to resurface again.

Let’s be honest now if the child drowned everyone would’ve thought that she killed the baby for some odd reason this always happens

It’s so eerie that she sang a song about dying young and her body sinking in a river.

So she had enough strength to swim with her son and push him onto the boat, but she couldn't grab onto the boat??

Something just doesn’t add up.... if she was close enough to the boat to save her kid why couldn’t she have grabbed on to the boat....

No life jacket, no anchor. Overestimated her abilities while underestimating nature. Safety First and always! Just sayin.

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.”

Biggest mistake was not wearing the life jacket. Everything else would’ve been fine

Adults shouldn’t just run out of energy like that while swimming. Sounds like she wasn’t a very good swimmer. Rip

Why they keep saying she was a glee star, they make it seem like that's all she was known for.

That poor boy! I’m thinking he cried himself to sleep on that boat after waiting for his mom to return. I can’t imagine the distress he was in. My heart breaks for him and the family. ❤️ RIP
