Hundreds of pages of documents have been leaked revealing China's brutal crackdown on Uighur Muslims in the Xinjiang region.
The New York Times detailed its findings, saying a government manual given to local authorities described the more than one million Uighurs and other Muslim minorities who have been detained as "infected by the virus of radicalism".
It gives directives on how to control the Uighur population in Xinjiang and outlines plans on extending restrictions on Islam in other parts of China.
The documents outline private speeches dating back to 2014 by President Xi Jinping, ordering the mass detention of Uighurs.
The leaks also suggest there is more resistance within the Chinese communist party than previously known.
Sophie Richardson, the China director at Human Rights Watch, talks to Al Jazeera.
