Saying that Ravenna was distant from the capital of the empire is maybe misleading. It had been the capital of the Western Roman Empire during its final years, and subsequently served as the capital of the Ostrogoths under Theodoric. It was during this time that San Vitale was begun. While the church was finished after the Eastern Romans, whose capital was Constantinople, captured the city, Ravenna was still one of the most important cities in Italy.

I very much appreciate your work. I'm watching everything on your channel, since i'm studying for my art history exam and one thing that stuck in my mind is the delivery of information. Don't get me wrong, it helps me a lot, but i would prefer a more natural approach on subjects, so whispering doesn't emphasize the effect. I believe you both are passionate about art, but i definitely guess it's tyring to speak in the same manner about art in real life. :)) You have lots of important things to say and i'm grateful for that, just wanted to share my own vision. Thanks <3

Fantastic video, but did I miss it or did you not point out Belisarius and Narses standing behind and to either side of Justinian in the mosaic?

I have a question, if you don't know the answer that is okay. At timestamp 1:32 on the left side there are carvings of naked men. Would you happen to know if those carvings are original to the 6th century building or if they were added later? If you don't have time to answer my question that is okay.

Ravenna was the last capital of the Western Roman Empire, the capital of the Ostrogothic Kingdom and the Exarchate of Ravenna and Italy after Roman Emperor Justinian reconquered the area for the Roman Empire which was ruled from Constantinople.

One aspect that wasn't mentioned was the misalignment of the figure of Maximianus in the mosaic with Justinian. Maximianus' upper body and lower body don't match up appropriately; he looks severed.

Intresting, though I don't think most people will understand the depiction of the beardless Christ in the east, unless they studied Martin Buber's work the Ledgend of the Baal Shem. The Lamb on the is also a representation of the Ram of Able, from the old Testiment.
