Boris - the only person to ever get a real smile and laugh out of Gordon Brown.

Love him or hate him, he's actually acted on his words & most of his initial ideas for London have been followed through.

He is wonderful and a formidable scholar of the classics. His immense knowledge is to his credit and London is the beneficiary. We must all appreciate having Boris and thank God for Boris and for ping pong.

I have always admired Boris Johnson, and was really pleased when he was elected Mayor of London. This speech confirms that London's electorate got it totally right! Rock on, Boris, and well done for not putting your hands in your pockets during the flag handover (you nearly did!)

I really appreciated this speech. I've heard/seen from so many who thought it was embarrassing, and think they're missing the point really and can't have much of a sense of humour. Boris is a treasure and a unique mayor and I hope he can improve London as much as he makes us smile!

I remember I had to do a double close reading essay for practice maybe a couple of months ago. The passages were about the effect of video games on children, the first writer claiming that games help us learn and improve hand-eye coordination, whereas in the second writer wrote about games turning children into mini satins, or something like that. This second passage was written by our man Boris, and needless to say I read it in his voice. I nearly cried with laughter when he wrote "Phooey!"

Saw the speech live just after the Olympics closing ceremony on BBC, I laughed so much that I could not help coming to YouTube trying to find it. Such speeches are usually so boring, I have to give him credit for daring to be so absurd. Maybe London will bring the party and simple fun we did not get this time around in Beijing (perfect, secure, but boring Olympics really)

Absolutely brilliant. That is exactly what was required after all the pomp and ceremony.

macrosswarrior seems to think it's bad manners. I pity those who cannot see a classic moment when they see it.

If anyone thinks Boris just blunders through his speeches and hopes for the best, you are completely wrong.
He's a very clever man and he knows EXACTLY what he's doing.

The best political speech I've heard in a long time.

That speech genuinely ranks up there with some of Churchill's finest oratories.

Can you imagine, the safe, mealy-mouthed whining little speech that Ken Livingstone would have dribbled out if he''d been up there?

Congratulations Boris, back for another term as London Mayor. Well deserved.

How can anyone not like him? He loves people, bigs them up so much and you can't not like him. Wouldn't it be great if bosses were like that about their workers? Now THAT would inspire greater productivity and help pull us all out of the mess. So he sets a great example, he's a great leader, and I can't wait to vote for him when he's made party leader

Boris. Awesome, glad he represents the UK. Very amusing but somehow very unique.

I have to agree. I love Boris, I like him despite all his manifest faults. I despise his party and nearly all of his policies, but personally I cannot find it within myself to dislike Boris Johnson personally, I just think he's a wonderful person.

total genius.. glad he went out there to get the flag shirt untucked and all.. clearly a good public speaker and able to rally a supporting crowd. The fact that he doesnt take himself as a serious sour face is just a token into the bargain.

Classic! What a legend! You poms are lucky to have a politician with a sense of humour. Hope he's still Mayor in 2012, his opening speech alone would make it a fantastic Games!
