Tensions are mounting between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

On Sunday morning, fresh clashes erupted between Azerbaijan and Armenia's occupying forces in Nagorno-Karabakh, an internationally-recognized Azerbaijani territory.

The hostilities have been condemned by many countries, including Turkey - President Erdoğan has suggested that Armenia's actions are acting as an obstacle to peace in the region.

Nagorno-Karabakh is a mountainous and heavily-forested patch of land in the west of Azerbaijan, at its border with Armenia.

Under international law, Nagorno-Karabakh is recognized as part of Azerbaijan, but the region has been occupied by Armenia, since Azerbaijani troops were pushed out in a war in the 1990s.

Earlier this year, hostilities in the region were reignited - resulting in the worst skirmishes seen there since 2016 - when intense fighting killed dozens and threatened to escalate into all-out war.

The question now, is what role, if any, will the international community play in resolving this decades long dispute? Can Armenian troops be encouraged to leave the region? Is rapprochement between the two former Soviet states possible?

Produced by Aldila Fatawa.

Host: Jaffar Hasnain
Guest:
1. Matthew Bryza, Former Ambasador to Azerbaijan and White House Official
2. Simon Maghakyan, human rights activist, political scientist, and researcher

Thank you so much Mr. Jaffar for telling the truth, it was really great.

And it is quite normal to see that they don't want to talk about the facts as it will vividly reveal the armenian occupation and terrorism.

Listen, you have maps, history books, top officials talking about this for decades without the West even looking at it. For 30 years, France, Russia and US have been the leaders in order to get this sorted, but the thing is none of those countries want Azerbaijan to win. Armenia is in huge debt to almost all of the countries in OSCE Minsk Group, and for almost 30 years the have been 'negotiating', but honestly its all political bullshit! Azerbaijan has every right to take back its land, and we don't need to answer to anyone!

Yet again an Armenian who is talking pure nonsense. These are people who are creating their own reality. And that is dangerous in a world people like two believe what anyone has to say

If Armenia sees itself right, then Cyprus was turkish for 400 years why was it given to greeks why was the turks punished for the 1974 war, Christian and west states will always pick and choice what law certain states have to follow
