Helicopters are the motorcycles of air travel. They're smaller and more fun, but also more dangerous.

I don’t cry when celebs die but when Kobe died it hit differently...

For me those 15 minutes spent circling and asking permission is the indicator that it is time to pull the plug on the journey via Helicopter and be late to the event. Common sense has to kick in at some point.

Oh, I see! The FAA balances out the value of lives over the cost of equipment that they don’t have to pay for! The FAA is just another corrupt government bureaucracy.

Moneys more important than safety, sadly.

"The Lakers were back at practice remembering all nine victims."
Thank you, let's remember all nine, not just two.

Taws? What about common sense? Flying in those conditions is a big no.

RIP Kobe. Maybe something good can come from this tragedy. The FAA could wake up and require "Taws" on these helicopters which cost thirteen million dollars.

why would it suddenly drop so fast tho? seems like running into a ridge and dropping down that fast are different issues. yes, the ridge is the reason, but because the drop...or the fog? something isn't being explained

I wish we could all come together this way after each human passes. 8 other people whose names i had to search hard to find died that day. If we all learned to mourn together equally we could maybe live better as equals. ✌🏼

I'm

1. the pilot doesn't get any signal from Socal to continue to fly in VFR conditions
2. tries to turn back towards Van Nuys Airport
3. crashes while doing the turn at high speed

4.This flight shouldn't have given a GO from the beginning since there was no helicopters flying in that AREA at that time.

Hard to believe this wasn't installed and without it, the pilot should have cancelled the flight.
There is also GPS terrain mapping that adds even more safety. ( most commercial planes have both now )
Kobe would have gladly paid for this equipment if it meant a safer flight.

"For sixteen years the NTSB has recommended..." ever since March 23, 2004, when another Sikorsky S-76 flew into terrain and killed 9 in Galveston, TX, on the same day Kobe and the Lakers lost a game in Houston.
