RAF jets strike first Islamic State targets in Iraq 4.5
Watch Tornado aircraft return to their base in Cyprus following their first air strikes against Islamic State forces in Iraq.

The two British jets British jets earlier launched two attacks on IS positions, destroying a heavy weapon position and an armed vehicle.

The Ministry of Defence in London said the Tornados first dropped one Paveway IV guided bomb on a “heavy weapon position which was engaging Kurdish ground forces” in north western Iraq.

The two Tornados of II Squadron, usually based at RAF Marham, then spotted an armed pick-up truck and struck it with a Brimstone missile.

“An initial assessment indicates that both precision strikes were successful,” the MoD said.

The strikes occurred in what is believed to be the sixth armed reconnaissance sortie flown from RAF Akrotiri since MPs voted to authorise ground strikes on IS forces.
