Avatar: The Last Airbender is an absolutely incredible show and Leaves From The Vine is guaranteed to make you cry every single time. The reason I never really considered it for a piano cover is due its simplicity. It's just four bars and two chords. So to expand it, I added quite a bit of variations and some additional chord progression that goes beyond what you hear in the show. It's definitely meant to be ear candy.

Enjoy!

The real-life story surrounding this song is quite touching. Season 2, Episode 15 "The Tales of Ba Sing Se" was Mako Iwamatsu's (Iroh's Voice Actor's) last episode, as he had been diagnosed with esophageal cancer and passed a few weeks after the recording. Because the episode was yet to be animated and aired at the time of his passing, the studio wanted to do something in memoriam to him. The picture of Lu Ten is actually Mako when he was younger, only edited to fit the plot. The song "Leaves From the Vine" was dedicated to Mako's military service, as he was also a soldier. Because the song was the last lines Mako would read/sing for the series, Greg Baldwin - the man who took over voicing Iroh - refuses to sing it to fans at Meet and Greet's out of respect, as he says, "That's Mako's song".

How does a piano cover of a song that is only sung like once in a series from over a decade ago able to so utterly mess me up?

Lyrics for those who prefer this version:

Leaves from the vine
Falling so slow
Like fragile tiny shells
Drifting in the foam

Little soldier boy
Come marching home
Brave soldier boy
Come marching home

Ash in the snow
Falling so slow
Like fragile broken hearts with no place to go

Little soldier boy
Taken from home
Forced to fight a war
That was not his own

Little soldier boy
Cold and alone
Brave soldier boy
Never made it home

Leaves from the vine
Changing so slow
Like empty fallen souls
Looking for a home

Little soldier boy
Thought he could soar
Brave soldier boy
Fallen in the war

My little soldier boy
I need you home
Brave soldier boy
Come marching home

Leaves from the vine
Falling so slow
Like fragile tiny shells
Drifting in the foam
Little soldier boy
Come marching home
Brave soldier boy
Comes marching home

Those leaves did grow
From branches overgrown
Drifting slowly down
Resting on the loam
Little soldier boy
Taken from home

Forced to fight a war
That's not his own

Leaves from the vine
Falling so slow
Like fragile tiny shells
Drifting in the foam
Little soldier boy says
"Carry me home"
Sleeping soldier boy
Is carried home

Apples from tree
Are Falling quickly
Left in grass
Living in the past
Grown soldier man
Lying in the sand
Asks for mercy
And a sip of tea

Leaves from the vine
Falling so slow
Never seen again
A message he sends
"Dear father man
Come take me home
I can't take this
I give to you, this tome"

The fact that this video has absolutely no section called "Most replayed" is a clear sign that this song is a work of art from start to finish

To those who don’t know: iroh’s voice actor name was Mako. He knew that he would die soon of cancer and little soldier boy was his last episode. He sang the song not for iroh, but also for us. The song highlights his life’s story. He was not acting to cry. He was crying in real life. Long live the king :)
