"There's a ring of gas in a very tight orbit around that black hole."

That's what she said.

when i was growing up in the 50s and 60s, we were taught that " space " was empty between galaxies and solar systems. now we know, that it is FULL of stuff

What an exciting time to be alive! I was 7 years old when the first man walked on the moon, and I just hope that I will be watching the firs man walk on Mars one day!! There is no beginning, no middle and no end to "The Universe" it simply is, always has been and always will be.

Because you haven't seen a close-up moon photo doesn't mean they don't exist. But closer to the point, Hubble is really set up and made for distance (very long distance) shots. I have a scope, I've seen great moon close-ups of the moon and my scope is nothing compared to what's available.

What a wonderful gift to humanity, as a kid i was always fascinated by the wonders of the cosmos, and when they announced the Hubble project I just couldn't wait for it, I was so thrilled, finally a decent scope in space not being obscured by our atmosphere, we would be able to see forever....and dam it's been a marvel ever since those first images.

I remember arguing with my friends over what they would find out there, I told them unbelievable vastness and trillions of planets...No way they said we're the only system they said, I looked at them thinking...even my friends are stupid....sigh.

Now hubble soon to be surpassed by an even more powerful telescope, this will be just as extraordinary....will we see city lights on distant plants....haha...I hope so.

dreams r not linear, they r random and usually based on emotions expressed with symbols, and personal. reality is linear and shared.
the realms of imagination is where we play with thoughts, if we choose we can share these thoughts with various communications in reality. all inventions are first created in the imagination, but only if they r practical can they be brought into reality..
why don't u believe in reality?

carl sagan wants me to tell you that sensationalizing a tool/ weapon of science undermines the intrinsic value of the hubbles discoveries.

Thank you. It made me cry it is so beautiful. It is hard to believe it has already been twenty years since it's first launch. I am looking forward to what the James Webb brings us.

James Webb...2014? It's 2019 as I write this and that piece of engineer's play toy is farther than ever from a launch date. (I believe the latest guesstimate is 2021.) By the time this piece of junk is operational, all the other galaxies will have passed beyond our visual horizon.
